Although I promote Linux heavily most of the advice I give about computers applies to all computers including windows and mac.

If you think you should expect security as well as privacy from your own computer you should consider using Linux instead of Windows and spend a little time learning how to use it properly.
I recommend Linux Mint. It is my preferred distribution and is also great for beginners in the Linux world.
